with every seat filled, a 9+1 Force Urbania takes around 8 to 10 large suitcases, a 12+1 or 13+1 takes about 6 to 8 medium suitcases, and a 16+1 or 17+1 takes about 8 to 10 medium suitcases, plus small bags under the seats. If your group carries one big suitcase per person, leave two or three seats empty or book one size up.
That is the question we hear most after “what is the rate?” Families going to Goa for five days, NRIs landing at Mumbai airport with four bags each, wedding guests carrying gift boxes and saree trunks. Everyone wants to know the same thing: will all our luggage actually fit?
The honest answer is that Force Urbania luggage capacity depends on two things, the wheelbase of the vehicle and how many seats are filled. In this guide we break it down variant by variant, explain where bags go inside an Urbania, and share the packing rules our drivers use every day on Pune trips.
Where Does Luggage Go in a Force Urbania?
The Urbania is built on three wheelbases: short (3350 mm), medium (3615 mm) and long (4400 mm). The long wheelbase version is about 7 metres long, and every Urbania is roughly 2.1 metres wide and over 2.5 metres tall. More length means more seats, but not always more luggage room, because the extra length is mostly used for seat rows.
Force Motors does not publish an official boot volume in litres for the Urbania, so the useful way to think about it is by zones.
1. The Rear Area Behind the Last Row
This is the main luggage space, opened from the rear doors. How big it is depends on the layout. In a 9+1 layout on the medium wheelbase, the space where a last row would normally sit is left open, which gives a large, flat area for suitcases. In 12+1 and 13+1 layouts that space is mostly used for seats, so the rear area shrinks to a smaller shelf behind the last row.
2. Under the Seats
The Urbania’s raised seats leave room underneath for backpacks, laptop bags, shoe bags and soft duffels. Hard suitcases do not slide under, but soft bags do.
3. Inside the Cabin
The tall cabin and walk through aisle mean small bags can sit near your feet without blocking anyone. Keep the aisle clear for safety though, especially on ghat roads.
4. Roof Carrier (If Fitted)
Force sells a luggage rack for the Urbania, and some rental vehicles carry one. It is useful for extra suitcases on long trips, but ask before booking, because not every vehicle in every fleet has it, and in monsoon you will want waterproof covers.
How Many Bags Fit in Each Force Urbania Variant?
To keep this practical, we use three bag sizes. A large suitcase is a 28 inch check in bag, a medium suitcase is 24 inches, and a cabin bag is a 20 inch trolley or a backpack. The counts below are for a vehicle with every passenger seat filled.
| Urbania variant | Passengers | Large (28″) | Medium (24″) | Plus small bags | Rate from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9+1 Driver | 9 | 8 to 10 | 10 to 12 | 9 backpacks | βΉ31 / km |
| 12+1 Driver | 12 | 4 to 5 | 6 to 8 | 12 backpacks | βΉ32 / km |
| 13+1 Driver | 13 | 4 to 5 | 6 to 8 | 13 backpacks | βΉ32 / km |
| 16+1 Driver | 16 | 6 to 7 | 8 to 10 | 16 backpacks | βΉ33 / km |
| 17+1 Driver | 17 | 5 to 6 | 7 to 9 | 17 backpacks | βΉ33 / km |
9+1 Urbania: The Luggage Champion
This is the best Urbania for heavy luggage. With the rear area left open, nine people can each carry a full size suitcase plus a backpack. It is our first suggestion for airport runs, NRI families and five day Goa trips. If you are 7 or 8 people with a lot of bags, it beats an Innova Crysta by a wide margin.
12+1 and 13+1 Urbania: Best for Light Packers
These layouts put more people in the same length, so the rear area is smaller. They are perfect for day trips, weekend getaways and darshan tours where each person carries one medium bag or less. For a longer holiday with big suitcases, run the group at 10 or 11 people instead of 13.
16+1 and 17+1 Urbania: More Seats, Moderate Luggage
The long wheelbase gives a usable rear area, but with 16 or 17 people on board, one medium suitcase per two people is a realistic limit unless a roof carrier is fitted. For big groups with heavy luggage, see the comparison below.
The Simple Rule
Count one medium suitcase per person. If that number is more than the medium bag count for your variant, either leave seats empty (each empty seat in the last row frees space for about two medium bags) or book the next size up.
Which Urbania for Your Trip and Your Bags?
Airport transfers (Pune or Mumbai airport). International travellers often carry two check in bags each. For 6 to 8 people with that much luggage, book the 9+1. Our Pune to Mumbai airport cabs page and Pune airport pickup guide cover timing and pickup points.
Goa holiday, 4 to 5 days. Expect one medium suitcase and one backpack per person. A 9+1 for up to 9 people, or a 16+1 run at 12 to 13 people, works well. See our Force Urbania for Goa trips page.
Weekend hill station trip to Mahabaleshwar or Lonavala. Most people carry an overnight bag. Any layout works at full capacity, so pick by group size. Details on our Mahabaleshwar Urbania page.
Pilgrimage and darshan tours. Light bags, lots of puja items and prasad on the way back. The 12+1 and 13+1 are ideal here.
Weddings and family functions. Gift boxes, sweets and clothes bags take more room than suitcases suggest. Keep two seats spare or add a car for the luggage.
Packing Tips That Help Everything Fit
- Prefer soft duffel bags over hard shells. They squeeze into corners and under seats.
- Tell us the number and size of bags when you book, not on the day. We can then send a vehicle with a roof carrier or suggest a bigger layout.
- Load the biggest suitcases first, standing upright against the last row, then fill gaps with soft bags.
- Keep one small bag per person with you for water, medicines and chargers, so nobody needs to open the rear door at every stop.
- On monsoon trips, use rain covers for anything on the roof and keep electronics inside the cabin.
- Do not stack bags in the aisle or on empty seats without seat belts. A sudden brake on the ghat can send them flying.
Urbania or Tempo Traveller When You Have Heavy Luggage?
A traditional tempo traveller usually comes with a roof carrier as standard, which is why many families with heavy bags still choose it. The Urbania wins on comfort, a quieter ride, individual AC vents and captain style seats, but its luggage space is mostly inside the vehicle.
Here is how we usually advise Pune groups:
- Up to 9 people, heavy luggage: 9+1 Urbania. Best comfort and the most room per person.
- 10 to 13 people, light luggage: 12+1 or 13+1 Urbania.
- 10 to 13 people, heavy luggage: a 17 seater tempo traveller with a roof carrier, or a 16+1 Urbania run with a few seats empty.
- 14 to 17 people, heavy luggage: a 16+1 or 17+1 Urbania plus a car for bags, or a 20 seater tempo traveller.
We compare comfort, price and space in detail in our Force Urbania vs Tempo Traveller guide.
When to Add a Car
If luggage is the only problem, adding a small car is often cheaper than jumping to a bigger vehicle. A Toyota Innova Crysta running beside the Urbania can carry 4 to 5 large suitcases and two or three extra people. This is common for NRI airport pickups and wedding parties.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the boot space of the Force Urbania in litres?
Force Motors does not publish an official boot volume in litres for the Urbania. Luggage space depends on the wheelbase and seat layout, which is why it is better measured in number of bags.
How many suitcases fit in a 9 seater Force Urbania?
With all 9 passengers on board, about 8 to 10 large 28 inch suitcases or 10 to 12 medium ones fit, plus backpacks under the seats.
How many bags fit in a 17 seater Force Urbania?
With all 17 seats filled, plan for about 7 to 9 medium suitcases plus small bags. For more, leave a few seats empty or ask for a vehicle with a roof carrier.
Does the Force Urbania have a roof carrier?
Force offers a roof luggage rack as an accessory, but not every rental Urbania has one fitted. Mention it while booking if you need it.
Is the Urbania good for airport transfers with heavy luggage?
Yes, especially the 9+1. Its open rear area takes full size check in bags for every passenger.
Which carries more luggage, Urbania or tempo traveller?
At the same seat count, a tempo traveller with a roof carrier usually takes more total luggage. The Urbania carries bags inside the cabin and offers a much more comfortable ride.
Can I keep bags on empty seats?
Small soft bags, yes. Avoid placing heavy suitcases on seats or in the aisle, as they can shift on ghat roads.
What should I tell the travel agency about my luggage?
The number of bags and their size (large, medium or cabin). With that, we can suggest the right Urbania layout or add a car if needed.
