Every year, around the time the monsoon ends and the air turns soft and dry, Pune families start asking the same question: where can we go for a few quiet days by the sea? The Konkan coast is the best answer. Clean beaches, old temples, red soil roads under coconut trees, and food that is simple and very good.

This guide gives you a practical 3 day Konkan trip from Pune covering Diveagar, Harihareshwar and Ganpatipule. It includes the route, the timings, realistic distances, what to see at each stop, what the transport will cost per person, and the mistakes that make this trip tiring. I will also be honest about one thing early: this is a long route for 3 days. If your group has elders or small children, read the lighter plan near the end.

We are Shelke Travels in Karve Nagar, and we have been running group and family trips from Pune for more than 30 years. The Konkan roads, ferry timings and ghats are routes our drivers know well.

Best Time for a Konkan Trip

November to February is the sweet spot. The weather is pleasant, the sea is calm and the beaches are comfortable even at midday. The monsoon is beautiful but not ideal for this particular plan. Heavy rain slows the ghat sections, swimming at many Konkan beaches is usually restricted, and ferry services can be disrupted. Summer is hot and humid, though it is also mango season.

If you are planning for November, our guide to the best places to visit in November in Maharashtra has more ideas. Weekends and long weekends in this season fill up quickly, so book stays and your vehicle early.

Day 1: Pune to Diveagar

Distance: about 160 km | Drive time: 4 to 4.5 hours plus stops

Start early, ideally between 5:30 and 6:00 AM. The usual route goes from Pune through Paud, Mulshi, Tamhini Ghat, Nizampur and Mangaon, then turns towards Mhasla and Diveagar. Tamhini Ghat is scenic and green after the rains, and Mulshi is a natural place for a breakfast stop.

Road quality changes from year to year, with some patches better than others, so your driver will choose the best route on the day.

What to do in Diveagar

  • Diveagar Beach: A wide, clean and relatively quiet beach lined with casuarina and coconut trees. It is ideal for an easy walk, sunset and sitting by the water.
  • Suvarna Ganesh Temple: A well known Ganesh temple in Diveagar, and a nice first darshan for your Konkan trip.
  • Local food: Try a Konkani thali with fish or a vegetarian version, solkadhi and ukadiche modak where available.

Evening plan: Reach by late morning or noon, check in, have lunch, rest and walk to the beach in the afternoon. Keep the evening relaxed, because Day 2 starts early.

Stay tip: Choose a homestay or beach resort in Diveagar or Shrivardhan. Book at least a week ahead in the season.

Day 2: Diveagar to Harihareshwar, then to Ganpatipule

Distance: about 35 to 40 km to Harihareshwar, then about 205 to 225 km to Ganpatipule
Drive time: around 6 to 7 hours in total with stops

This is the longest and most demanding day, so start by 7:30 AM.

Morning: Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar

From Diveagar, the road runs through Shrivardhan, a small coastal town with Peshwa heritage and a lovely beach, and continues to Harihareshwar. The roads are narrow and winding but pretty.

Harihareshwar highlights

  • Shri Harihareshwar Temple: An old and respected temple, often called Dakshin Kashi, set between the sea and a hill.
  • Kalbhairav Temple and Pradakshina Marg: The pilgrim walk around the hill follows the coastline with steps and rocky stretches, and it is the best part of the visit. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours, and wear proper footwear. Elders may want to skip the full circuit.
  • Harihareshwar Beach: A clean beach right next to the temple, good for a short break.

Leave Harihareshwar by 12:30 PM at the latest, after an early lunch.

Afternoon: The Drive South to Ganpatipule

There are two ways to go, and your driver will decide based on timings and conditions.

  1. The coastal route with ferries. This is the scenic option. It uses short ferry crossings such as Veshvi to Bagmandale and Dabhol to Dhopave, and can include the Tawsal to Jaigad crossing. It saves distance but depends on ferry timetables, tides and weather.
  2. The highway route. Back to Mangaon and then south on the Mumbai Goa highway through Mahad, Khed and Chiplun. It does not depend on ferries but adds distance and time.

Please confirm ferry timings a day before, since schedules can change. Ferries do not run at night, so do not start this leg late. Expect to reach Ganpatipule around 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Check in, have an early dinner and rest.

Day 3: Ganpatipule and the Return to Pune

Distance: about 325 km back to Pune | Drive time: around 7 hours

Morning in Ganpatipule

Ganpatipule is one of the most loved temple and beach towns in Maharashtra. Plan a slow morning here, because you will not want to rush it.

  • Swayambhu Ganpati Temple: The main temple, where the idol is believed to have appeared on its own. A short pradakshina around the hill is part of the darshan.
  • Ganpatipule Beach: Right behind the temple, with soft sand and a calm atmosphere. It is good for a quick walk after darshan.
  • Optional add ons if time allows: Prachin Konkan, an open air museum of traditional Konkan life, and the scenic Aare Ware coastal road nearby. Keep these short, since the drive back is long.

Leave Ganpatipule by 10:30 or 11:00 AM. The usual route back goes via Sakharpa and Shahuwadi to Karad and Satara, then to Pune. Plan lunch on the way and a tea break in the evening. Expect to reach Pune between 6:30 and 8:00 PM, depending on traffic and stops. We strongly advise against starting the return later than noon, because the ghat sections after dark are tiring.

A Lighter Option If 3 Days Feels Too Rushed

Be honest with yourself about your group. If you have small children or elders, or you simply want time on the beach, these options work better.

  • 2 days: Diveagar and Harihareshwar only. Pune to Diveagar on Day 1, Harihareshwar in the morning of Day 2, and back to Pune by evening. This is the easiest and most relaxed version of a Konkan trip from Pune.
  • 4 days: Add a night near Ratnagiri or Ganpatipule. Split the Day 2 drive, stay in Dapoli or Guhagar, and reach Ganpatipule the next morning.
  • Add more Konkan: Some groups continue south towards Goa. See our Force Urbania on rent in Goa page if you plan a longer coastal holiday.

Transport Options and Cost for a 3 Day Konkan Trip

The right vehicle depends on group size. Seats should never be filled completely on a long trip like this, so leave a few free for luggage.

Planning Estimate

The actual route is roughly 750 to 800 km. Our one day package covers 300 km, so a 3 day trip is usually planned on the 900 km pattern. Using the current rate chart, the base transport cost is about:

  • 13+1 Driver Force Urbania, 13 people: around β‚Ή28,800, or about β‚Ή2,215 per person
  • 17 seater tempo traveller, 17 people: around β‚Ή25,200, or about β‚Ή1,480 per person
  • 26 seater tempo traveller, 26 people: around β‚Ή36,000, or about β‚Ή1,385 per person
  • 32 seater bus, 32 people: around β‚Ή45,000, or about β‚Ή1,405 per person

These are planning figures, not a final quote. Toll, parking, state permit and driver night charges are extra at actuals, and the final fare depends on your date, route and the vehicle assigned. Stay, food and entry costs come on top and are separate. Please get a written quote before paying any advance, and read our cancellation and refund policy and terms and conditions.

Practical Tips for the Konkan Trip

  • Start early every day. Konkan roads are winding, and the real travel time is longer than the distance suggests.
  • Avoid night driving on ghats. Keep your arrival times before sunset.
  • Book stays in advance. Homestays in Diveagar, Harihareshwar and Ganpatipule fill up fast on weekends.
  • Carry cash. Some small places, ferries and stalls prefer cash, and network can be weak.
  • Pack light layers and sunscreen. Days are warm, evenings are breezy.
  • Respect the sea. Swim only where it is clearly safe and locals or lifeguards allow it. Never enter the water after dark.
  • Dress modestly for temples and carry a scarf for dargah or temple visits.
  • Keep medicines and snacks handy, especially for elders and children.
  • Confirm ferry timings if you take the coastal route, and keep a backup plan.
